Kenya is in mourning following a tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of the country’s military chief and nine other distinguished personnel. President William Ruto delivered the heartbreaking news, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of General Francis Omondi Ogolla, the esteemed leader of the Kenyan Defense Force. Alongside General Ogolla, eleven other highly graded military personnel were onboard the ill-fated helicopter, with nine tragically losing their lives and two surviving the crash.
The incident occurred in Kenya’s Rift Valley, specifically in Elgeyo Marakwet county, located about 400 kilometers northwest of the capital, Nairobi. Reports indicate that the helicopter burst into flames upon impact, adding to the severity of the tragedy.
General Francis Ogolla, born on February 12, 1962, was a revered figure within the Kenyan military. He ascended to the position of Chief of Kenya’s Defence Forces on April 28, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and leadership. Survived by his wife and two children, General Ogolla’s untimely passing has left a void in the nation’s military and beyond.
In honor of the victims, the government has declared a three-day period of national mourning, beginning on Friday, April 19th. This somber period serves as a tribute to the lives lost and a reminder of their enduring contributions to the nation.
