Former South African President Thabo Mbeki embarked on a charm offensive in Soweto, rallying support for the ANC ahead of the upcoming general elections. Accompanied by Johannesburg’s ANC leadership and provincial figures, Mbeki was greeted warmly by hundreds of Soweto residents at Jabulani Mall.
The atmosphere was electric as chants of Mbeki’s name filled the air, with residents eager for a glimpse of the former president and a chance to shake his hand, albeit under tight security.
Acknowledging the ANC’s shortcomings, Mbeki didn’t shy away from addressing issues of corruption within the party. Urging Soweto’s electorate to cast their votes for the ANC on May 29th, he emphasized the need to root out corruption and uphold the party’s integrity.
Expressing gratitude for the warm reception, Mbeki reassured the crowd, instilling confidence that the ANC had viable solutions to address the challenges facing the community.
Mbeki’s recent criticisms of the ANC and President Cyril Ramaphosa were not overlooked. His concerns, particularly regarding corruption and the quality of ANC members, were echoed in his address to the Soweto crowd.
Highlighting the significance of Mbeki’s involvement in the ANC’s campaign, Mdumiseni Ntuli, the ANC’s head of elections, emphasized Mbeki’s stature as a respected leader across society and his ability to engage with the electorate effectively.
The ANC’s strategy of ‘unleashing’ senior leaders like Mbeki, along with figures such as Baleka Mbete, Kgalema Motlanthe, and David Mabuza, underscores the party’s determination to secure victory in the upcoming elections.
With just over a month left until polling day, the ANC is intensifying its campaign efforts, aiming to maintain or surpass its 2019 election results. Mobilizing its base and leveraging the influence of senior leaders are key components of the party’s strategy to secure electoral success.
