RETHINKING WOMEN’S HEALTH IN AFRICA: IT’S TIME FOR OPEN CONVERSATIONS.
Women’s and girls’ health have become a concern over the past years looking at the health care system in Africa. Some health complication women and girls living in Africa face include maternity complication, mental health and depression as a result sexual and gender base violence, breast and cervical cancer, menstrual complication, malaria, sexually transmitted diseases among others.
Despite a reduction in maternity mortality, Africa still records the highest maternity deaths in the world according to World Health Organization reports. Talking about maternity deaths, Gambian women recently raised concerns about maternity death after almost 15 women lost their lives due to maternity complication within a short interval.
Moreover, pregnancy among girls is a big concern in Africa. This is because limited information about the girl’s health is available to girls especially in the rural areas of Africa.
Moving forward, sexually transmitted diseases is not an exception when it comes to women’s health problems in Africa. According to Avert.org, in sub-Saharan Africa, one in every five new infections happens among adolescent girls and young women, in East and Southern Africa, young women will acquire HIV five to seven years earlier than their male peers and in West and Central Africa, five young women become HIV positive for every three new infections among young men.
TIPS FOR WOMEN AND GIRLS FOR A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE.
1) Know yourself and body.
2) Watch or read health guide materials to help you become more inform.
3) Join a youth or women’s organization to interact and connect.
4) Relax, exercise and eat healthy.
5) Do frequent medical checks up to know your health status.
6) Speak out to a mentor or trusted person when in stress or doubt.
