Limpopo dance queen, Makhadzi, has achieved a significant milestone in her career by securing her very first BET nomination. The talented singer, whose real name is Ndivhudzannyi Ralivhona, is up for the Viewer’s Choice: Best New International Act category. This prestigious nomination is a tribute to her roots in HaMashamba, where she hopes to inspire young, aspiring musicians to dream big and work hard.
Makhadzi, known for her energetic performances and eclectic style, is competing against a diverse group of international artists. The lineup includes South Africa’s own amapiano producer Tyler ICU, Nigerian singer-songwriter Seyi Vibez, British musicians Bellah and Cristale, as well as rapper Duquesa, music journalist and singer Holly G, French singer Jungeli, and rapper Oruam. The award ceremony is set to take place next month, and the anticipation is high.
In an exclusive interview with Sowetan S Mag, Makhadzi expressed her desire to be a beacon of hope for musicians from disadvantaged backgrounds. “Never give up, believe in yourself and your God-given talent, and do not relax when you finally get recognised. Work hard like there is no tomorrow,” she advised. She emphasized the importance of giving one’s all in the studio and treating every performance as if it were the last. Additionally, she stressed the necessity of reading contracts carefully and involving a lawyer to avoid the pitfalls she encountered with her former record label.
The nomination came as a pleasant surprise to Makhadzi, who acknowledged the hard work she has put into her craft. “This nomination means growth and global recognition to my music career and for me, it’s a step in the right direction,” she said. Reflecting on her journey, she shared that she never imagined her future would see her being recognized as one of Africa’s biggest artists.
Makhadzi’s path to success was fraught with challenges, including performing at taxi ranks and selling CDs on the streets. Despite these hardships, she remained resilient and dedicated, leading to her current acclaim. She also touched on the changes fame has brought to her life, particularly the need to be cautious about her social media presence. Nevertheless, she remains grounded, attributing her success to her fans and maintaining her identity as a talented young girl from the rural village of HaMashamba in Venda.
If Makhadzi wins the award, she will join the ranks of South African celebrity such as Sjava, Sho Madjozi, and Black Coffee, who have previously won the Best New International Act award. She revealed that her first act upon winning would be to return to her hometown to celebrate with the people who have supported her throughout her journey.
Makhadzi’s story is a powerful reminder that with talent, hard work, and perseverance, success is within reach, no matter the starting point.
