Lira is making a triumphant return to the stage at Bassline Fest following her stroke two years ago
The queen of Afro-soul, Lira, is poised to make a resounding return to the spotlight on Africa Day, marking her comeback after a two-year hiatus following a life-altering stroke. Renowned for her soulful melodies and powerful performances, Lira, born Lerato Moipone Molapo, is set to grace the stage once again, captivating audiences with her unparalleled talent and unwavering resilience.
Lira’s journey back to the stage has been nothing short of extraordinary. It began with the unexpected turn of events when she suffered a stroke while in Frankfurt, Germany, leaving her temporarily unable to read, write, or speak. The news sent shockwaves through the music industry and her legion of fans worldwide, as they rallied behind her during her arduous recovery process.
For Lira, the road to recovery was not just about regaining her physical abilities but also about rediscovering her sense of self and purpose. Despite facing immense challenges, she remained undeterred in her determination to overcome adversity and reclaim her rightful place in the spotlight.
“People were initially interested in my recovery journey, and as time went by, started asking when I would perform again,” Lira shared. “I have been practicing to perform as part of my recovery and have come to accept that the old Lira is gone.”
The prospect of returning to the stage filled Lira with a renewed sense of excitement and anticipation. Her upcoming performance at the Bassline Fest Africa Day Celebration on Saturday, May 25, holds special significance, coinciding with the celebration of 30 years of democracy in South Africa, as well as Bassline’s 30th Anniversary.
“What makes this performance extra special is that we are celebrating 30 years of democracy in South Africa, the new Lira, and Bassline’s 30th Anniversary,” Lira expressed. “I have so much to be grateful for, and I look forward to seeing you at Constitution Hill Square on Africa Day.”
Despite the challenges she has faced, Lira remains grateful for the second chance at life that her stroke afforded her. Dubbing it her ‘Stroke of Luck,’ she views the experience as a blessing in disguise, propelling her towards a newfound sense of purpose and gratitude.
“My stroke was a blessing as it has given me a second chance at life,” Lira reflected. “Many people survive having a stroke, but the damage to their brain leaves them permanently scarred and unable to move their bodies. I feel fortunate that physically I have not been affected, and the new me has accepted that my brain has been damaged.”
Lira’s journey serves as a testament to the indomitable human spirit and the power of resilience in the face of adversity. Her unwavering determination to overcome challenges and pursue her passion for music embodies the essence of strength and perseverance.
Paige Holmes, organizer of Bassline Fest, emphasized the significance of Lira’s comeback and the broader theme of celebrating women’s resilience and strength. “Lira has gone from a stroke to singing health,” Holmes remarked. “She calls this her ‘Stroke of Luck.
In addition to Lira’s much-anticipated performance, Bassline Fest promises an array of cultural delights, including an African artisanal market featuring exquisite food, arts, and crafts.
