Award-winning artist and Nigerian afrobeat star Davido has announced he will donate more than $600 000 to orphanages across Nigeria as part of his birthday celebrations.

This came after the Nigerian star– ask fans who trust “I’ve given you a hit song” to send money to a bank account he detailed under his name, intending to raise 100 million Naria ($243,000) to clear his Rolls-Royce from a port.

Less than 15 minutes after the tweet went live, he was able to raise $17,000. Donors included Nigerian celebrity stars, fans and his colleagues while giving updates of the donation through screenshots of his account detail shared on his verified social media accounts.

On Saturday, the ‘Fall’ singer announced the full amount he received from fans and celebrity friends totalled over $485,000, revealing his intentions to donate it all to charity. At the same time, add his contribution of 50 million Naira($120 000).

He wrote, “In my usual playful manner, I requested a few days ago that my friends and colleagues send money in celebration of my birthday,” “The response and outcome exceeded my expectations.”

He also revealed that there would be a five-man committee who would be responsible for distributing the funds accordingly.

Many have hailed the star on their various social media accounts following his donation announcement, including actresses, businessmen, and even artists.

Davido is one of Africa’s most prominent artists with over 200 million followers on Instagram, making him the African artist with the highest number of followers on the platform.

This is not the first time Davido is engaged in charitable works. In April 2020, he donated proceeds from his music video “Dolce & Gabbana” to pandemic relief efforts as well as more than 6,000 bags of rice across his home state of Osun.���
